It's easy for an armchair quarterback to look back and make theories. I would suggest this man has never seen Lake Superior turn. There are over 350 ships on the bottom of Lake Superior, not all of them had structural faults. My father was working off a pipeline on Lake Superior that day and he was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He stated many times that he had never seen Superior turn so fast and so violently. What he is saying is common sense but had no bearing on the sinking. The issues on the Fitzgerald were hatchway latches missing, slight cosmetic damage from scraping the locks. Little things here and there. I see a man trying to get cheap publicity. I suggest this clown study the storm that night! Also the idea of the "3 sisters".

Any tips for people with the fear of open water? I want to take up diving, I've always wanted to do it but even more so because I'm so scared of it. but the idea alone makes me light headed and short of breath, watching this made me a little dizzy with anxiety. So are there any tips on how to overcome this?

I agree with your formula, but... Many of the components of diving equipment are legitimately considered life support equipment and as the lion's share of good tropical diving is in remote developing countries (read: meager gear, poorly maintained) I would not recommend renting as a primary choice. Seldom have i encountered rental gear as good or as well-maintained as my own. Rent only until you are sure what equipment you want/need then buy it. It is questionable logic to reduce personal safety to financial formulae.
